Gospel Chord Progressions: 1–4, 2–5–1 and the Church Turnarounds
Gospel harmony is built on movement and colour. The basic engine is 1–4 (I to IV, back and forth), 2–5–1 for cadences and 1–6–2–5 for turnarounds, all played with rich 9th and 11th chords. The signature sound is the IV–iv–I resolution, where a major four turns minor before landing home, and the walk-ups that climb into each new chord.

Voice with 9ths and 11ths: rootless shapes in the right hand (3–5–7–9), the root and fifth in the left.
Dominant 9ths on V: G9 rather than G7, often with a suspended 4th resolving down.
Borrowed minor iv: the IV–iv–I move is the heart of the sound; try it at the end of any phrase.
Walk the bass: step up or down by scale and chromatic notes into each chord change.

People also ask
Short answers first, then the detail.
What is the 2-5-1 in gospel?
The ii–V–I cadence (Dm9–G9–Cmaj9 in C), voiced with 9ths and often decorated with a suspended dominant or a tritone substitute. Gospel players use it to end almost every phrase.
What chords are used in gospel music?
Major 9th and minor 9th chords on most degrees, dominant 9ths and 13ths on V, the borrowed minor iv, diminished passing chords and slash chords for walk-ups. Plain triads are rare.
How do I make my chords sound like gospel?
Add 9ths to every chord, voice them rootless in the right hand, use the IV–iv–I resolution, and connect chords with walking bass lines. Slow it down to around 70–80 BPM with a 12/8 or swung feel.
