Vocal Harmonizer Plugins: How They Work and How to Get Harmonies from One Take
Updated 3 min read
A vocal harmonizer plugin turns one vocal take into a stack: it detects the pitch of each note and adds copies of the voice a third, a fifth or an octave away, usually kept in the song's key. It's the fastest way to sketch backing harmonies, thicken a hook or build vocal textures you couldn't get from one singer.
The idea is older than plugins. Eventide's H910 Harmonizer, released in the mid-1970s, made real-time pitch-shifted harmonies possible, and Harmonizer is still Eventide's trademark. Today the job is done in software, inside your DAW.
How a vocal harmonizer works
- Pitch detection. The plugin tracks the fundamental pitch of the voice, note by note.
- Choosing the harmony note. A fixed-interval harmonizer always adds the same interval. A key-aware harmonizer looks up the note that fits the key and scale, so a third above is sometimes three semitones and sometimes four. A MIDI harmonizer takes its notes from what you play on a keyboard.
- Pitch shifting. Each harmony voice is a copy of the vocal shifted to its target note, ideally with the formants preserved so the copies don't sound like chipmunks or giants.
- Making it human. Small timing offsets, pitch drift and stereo spread stop the copies sounding like a clone of the lead.
Types of vocal harmony plugin
Fixed interval
- How it picks notes
- Always the same interval (e.g. +7 semitones)
- Best for
- Octaves, power-fifth doubles, quick effects
Key-aware (intelligent)
- How it picks notes
- Diatonic intervals in the key and scale you set
- Best for
- Backing harmonies that follow a melody
MIDI-controlled
- How it picks notes
- The notes you play or draw
- Best for
- Exact voicings, chord stacks, choir effects
Vocoder
- How it picks notes
- A synth plays the notes; the voice only shapes them
- Best for
- Robot choirs and synth-vocal hooks
Spectral (Gravity)
- How it picks notes
- Every partial of the voice is pulled onto a chord
- Best for
- Pads, ghost harmonies, textures
Harmonies from one take with Tune
Tune is our pitch corrector, and its Harmony control makes it a key-aware vocal harmonizer plugin as well. Set the song's Key and Scale, then pick 3rd above, 5th above, 3rd + 5th, octave up, octave down or 3rd below. Every harmony is built from the corrected lead, so it is in tune by construction. Harmony Mix sets the level, Spread pans the voices apart and Harmony Humanize adds loose timing, drift and scoops.

Good starting points are Gospel Thirds for a warm third above, Third Below Duet for a lower harmony line, and Wide Backing Stack for a full, panned chorus stack.
Harmony as a sound: Gravity and Choir
Sometimes you don't want more singers, you want the vocal to become something else. Gravity pulls every partial of the voice toward a chord you pick on its pads or play from MIDI, and its Ring control lets those chord notes sustain after each phrase. The result is a vocal that melts into a pad, a ghostly harmony that follows the chord changes, or a hard robotic unison, depending on the preset. It works the same way on drums, guitars and noise.

Choir is the vocoder route: a built-in synth sings the chord and your voice supplies the words. It's the sound of robot choirs and talking synths, covered in detail in what a vocoder is.
Other options: DAW tools and well-known harmonizers
- FL Studio includes Pitcher, which corrects pitch and can add harmonies from MIDI notes. Our pitch shifter guide for FL Studio covers its pitch tools.
- Any DAW can make a fixed harmony by hand: duplicate the vocal, pitch-shift the copy and nudge its timing. It takes longer, but you control every note.
- Dedicated harmonizers such as Antares Harmony Engine, Waves Harmony and the harmony module in iZotope Nectar offer more voices and voicing options than a pitch corrector's harmony mode.
How to make plugin harmonies sound real
- Tune the lead first. A harmonizer copies every wobble in the lead, so fix the pitch before you harmonize.
- Keep harmonies below the lead. 6 to 10 dB quieter is a good start for backing parts.
- Loosen the timing. A few milliseconds of offset and slightly different vibrato are what separate a choir from a clone.
- Pan them apart. Harmonies left and right, lead in the centre.
- Watch the formants. Shifts over about four semitones change the character of the voice; formant correction keeps it natural.
- Treat them as a group. Send the harmony voices to one bus with a little extra compression and a de-esser, then add reverb so they sit behind the lead.
FAQ
What does a vocal harmonizer plugin do?
It listens to a vocal, works out the pitch of each note and adds pitch-shifted copies of the voice at harmony intervals such as a third or a fifth above. Key-aware harmonizers pick intervals that fit the song's key, so the copies sound like backing singers rather than a parallel chipmunk.
Can a plugin make real-sounding harmonies?
It can get close for backing parts. The giveaways are perfect timing, identical vibrato and a voice that sounds too small or too big when shifted. Keep the harmony lower in the mix than the lead, loosen the timing with a humanize control, pan the voices apart and keep formants natural.
Is there a free vocal harmonizer plugin?
Some DAWs include tools that can do it: FL Studio's Pitcher can add MIDI-controlled harmonies, and any pitch shifter can make a fixed-interval harmony on a duplicated track. Dedicated harmonizers with key detection and humanizing are usually paid. Every one of our plugins can be tried free in the browser.
What is the difference between a harmonizer and a vocoder?
A harmonizer keeps your real voice and adds shifted copies of it, so it sounds like more singers. A vocoder replaces the pitch of your voice with a synth that plays the notes and keeps only the shape of your words, so it sounds like a synth singing. Both can produce chords from one vocal line.
Should harmonies go before or after pitch correction?
After. Tune the lead first, so the harmonizer tracks clean, steady notes and every copy inherits the correction. Tune does both in one plugin: it corrects the lead and builds its Harmony voices from the corrected pitch.
