Updated 2 min read
TAL-Vocoder is a free, classic-style vocoder with 11 bands and a built-in carrier synth, modelled on early-1980s hardware, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Choir is a 40-band vocoder with its own lush carrier (supersaw, saw or pulse with unison and chords) and an ensemble engine that turns one voice into a choir, for €39. Start with TAL-Vocoder for free vintage robot voices; pick Choir for clear, multi-voice choirs, harmonies and pads without routing.

What TAL-Vocoder does well
TAL-Vocoder recreates the sound of an early-80s hardware vocoder: 11 bands, a gritty, robotic character and a simple panel. You can play its internal carrier synth from MIDI or feed it any instrument through a sidechain, which makes it flexible for classic robot voices, vocoded synths and talking drums. It costs nothing, runs on Linux as well as Windows and macOS, and comes in every major format including CLAP.
What Choir does well
Choir is built so you only need to sing. Its carrier synth is inside: pick a key and a chord (major, minor, sus, 7ths, power, octaves or a single note) or play chords over MIDI. Up to 40 bands keep words clear, and sibilance and breath controls let S and T sounds through so lyrics stay intelligible. Turn up the Choir macro and every word is sung by an ensemble with octave doublings, singer-like drift, width and air. Formant shifts the voice ±12 semitones. 46 presets cover choirs, robots, pads, leads and effects.
Where TAL-Vocoder is stronger
- It's free, with no catch.
- External carrier: route any synth, pad or drum loop in as the carrier.
- Linux support and CLAP, for producers outside Windows and macOS DAWs.
- Authentic vintage grit if that classic 80s robot is the sound you want.
Where Choir is stronger
- No routing: sing and pick a chord; MIDI is optional.
- Clearer words with up to 40 bands and consonant pass-through.
- The choir engine: one voice becomes an ensemble, not one buzzing synth.
- Try it on your mic: every preset plays in the browser before you buy.
Which should you choose?
- Free vintage robot voice, or you want to vocode an external synth: TAL-Vocoder.
- Choirs, harmonies and vocal pads with clear words and no setup: Choir.
- A talk box sound you play with your voice: see Throat and our vocoder vs talk box guide.

FAQ
Is TAL-Vocoder free?
Yes. As of November 2026, TAL Software lists TAL-Vocoder among its free plugins, for Windows, macOS and Linux, in VST, VST3, AU, AAX and CLAP formats.
How do I use TAL-Vocoder?
Put it on your vocal track, then either play its built-in synth carrier with MIDI or route another instrument into it as an external carrier through your DAW's sidechain. Sing or speak while you play chords, and the vocoder shapes the carrier with your voice.
What's the difference between a vocoder and autotune?
Autotune retunes your own voice to the right notes. A vocoder imposes the shape of your voice (its vowels and consonants) onto a synth, so the synth 'talks' at the notes you play. Choir has its own carrier synth, so you only need to sing.
How many bands should a vocoder have?
Fewer bands (8 to 16) sound more robotic and vintage; more bands (20 to 40) make words clearer and smoother. TAL-Vocoder uses 11 bands for its early-80s character; Choir goes from 8 up to 40.
